Monthly Archives: July 2012

Fr. Harold’s Retirement

On August 12, we will have one worship service only, beginning at 10:00 am.  A luncheon in celebration of Harold’s retirement will follow.  Please contact Vanadeane Brooks or Christina Jackson to let us know if you will attend the luncheon.  If you would like to contribute photos or written greetings to a commemorative book for Fr. Harold, or if you would like to contribute to a retirement gift for Fr. Harold and Beverley, please send it to the church office.

Service Time Change

We expect to shift the time of our second service to 10:30 am beginning on August 5.  This will reduce the lag time between services making Sunday mornings easier for families and all involved in Sunday School.  There will be only one service on August 12, at 10:00 am; we will resume on August 19 with the new, slightly changed schedule: services at 8:00 am and 10:30 am.  Christian Formation stays at 9:30 am.

Sierra Service Project

Three of our members, Claire Augusto, Steve Augusto, and Josie Daughrity, participated in the Sierra Service Project work in Coarsegold, California, July 8 through July 13.  Next week at the Adult Forum and the 10:45 am service, they will share their experience.  We encourage everyone to come learn more about this outreach program.

On the Wall

During a prior Adult Forum (July 8), individuals identified passages from 1 Peter which they thought would be good for St. John’s. They can be seen on sheets of newsprint on the wall to the right of the nursery door. On the other side of the nursery door, the Vacation Bible School’s “God Sightings” are posted—things the children at VBS identified each day as reminders that God is with us.

Apologies for late web updating

I apologize for the missed week of announcement updates (the file with the announcements for July 8 seems to have gone missing) and the late posting of announcements this week. City Meet for the Stockton recreational swim league was this past weekend, and I spent Friday through Sunday there with Kate. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep things up to date going forward. -Keith

Readings for July 8

For those who would like to preview the lectionary for Sunday, July 8, the scriptures are: 2 Samuel 5:1-5,9-10, 2 Corinthians 12:2-10, Psalm 48, Mark 6:1-13.

Upcoming Adult Forums

On July 8 we’ll change topics as we view the Integrity video “Voices of Witness: Out of the Box” together, and discuss the inclusion of transgender Christians in the life of the church. This video features interviews with Fr. Harold as well as our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Chet Talton, and the Rev. Carolyn Woodall, deacon in our diocese. It’s a ground-breaking documentary about the witness of transgender Episcopalians courageously telling their stories of hope, healing and wholeness. The 26-minute film is available online here. Then, on July 15, we will welcome one of the women featured in the film, Vicki Gray, who will preach at both services and also tell her story during the Adult Forum hour. Please join us!

Sierra Service Project Commissioning

Today we commission three of our members, Claire Augusto, Steve Augusto, and Josie Daughrity, will participate in the Sierra Service Project work in Coarsegold, California, July 8 through July 13. They will join a contingent of youth from Galt and travel to the tribal lands of the Chukchansi tribe to improve the housing of the local Native American residents. The Chukchansi tribe is just one of the groups who each year invite Sierra Service Project to bring junior and senior high school youth together from churches all over California to serve others and to grown in their Christian faith. Josie and Steve will also serve as the adult counselors for their group, and both will be driving vehicles to the site—Josie with the kids in a van! We ask your prayers for our three participants and their work next week.

Please note that the Men’s BBQ previously scheduled for July 8 has been cancelled; the next barbecue dinner will be on September 9 at 5:30 p.m.
