Pastoral Care Needs This Week

Pastor Jim is away on a long-awaited vacation with his wife, Joni, in celebration of their 15th wedding anniversary. Rev. Anne is in the office during regular office hours and also available for pastoral emergencies through Thursday, October 4; then, while our regular clergy are out of town on October 5 and 6, Jeannie Canwell will be available to help should a need arise. If you need clergy assistance Friday or Saturday, please call Jeannie. Pastor Jim will be back Sunday, October 7.

Blessing of the Animals October 7

On October 7 we will bless animals between 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. in commemoration of the Feast of St. Francis (which is October 4). Bring your pets to be blessed. All animals are welcome! (Even stuffed or photographed.)

Survey Coming!

Watch for a special survey coming your way around the end of October!  This will be your chance to help us determine whether St. John’s should undertake a capital campaign to pay down our mortgage on the church, and what a realistic target for such a campaign would be.

You can take the survey online (which saves us the cost of postage) or by mail – we just need to know which you would prefer.  If you would like to take the survey online, please send an email to before October 15.

The surveys are being conducted for us by the Episcopal Church Foundation, which assures that all responses will be fully confidential.  ECF will provide a summary, analysis and recommendations back to St. John’s vestry.

Northern Deanery Pre-Convention Meeting

All delegates and alternates to Convention should plan to attend the Northern Deanery meeting on October 6 at 2 p.m. at St. Anne’s, Stockton. All are welcome to attend the meeting, which will address some convention business and some deanery business and activity.

New Office Administrator

We are pleased to announce that Penny Wilson has accepted the position of Parish Administrator to take Rev. Anne’s place in the office. Her first official day will be October 1. Penny will handle the parish calendar and scheduling, keys, mail, service sheets, everything related to the functioning of the office. If you’re not sure who to ask for things, please try Penny—if she doesn’t know, she will find out!

Parish Re-Keying

The vestry have agreed that this time of transition presents a good opportunity for re-keying of the parish; it has been a decade since original keys were handed out, and many have disappeared to unknown places. For the continued security of our facility, we will have new keys available to those who need them beginning next week on Tuesday, October 2, in the parish office and also on Sunday mornings thereafter.

Do You Have a Piece of Our History?

Most of St. John’s historical photos and other archives seem to have disappeared. (There’s a rumor that some were stored in one or more members’ homes when we moved from Locust & Lee, but no one seems to be sure about this.)  Do you have them?  Or do you have copies of photos, articles or other historical information you can share?   Or would you be interested in helping track down and compile our history?  If your answer to any of these is “yes,” please contact the church office.

Updating Your Contact Information

Does St. John’s have the latest information about your address, phone numbers and email address on file? If you are one of the many people who have gotten a different cell phone number in the past few years, dropped your land phone line completely, changed your email address, switched jobs, retired, or moved, we want to know about it.  Please check your current listing in the directory (copies will be on the ministry table for the next few weeks), and let us know of any changes by filling out an address change card, or email or call the office.  Please update your information by Oct. 15 – we hope to print new directories by the end of the month.
