Spirit Day

Sunday in the Diocese of San Joaquin we celebrate “Spirit Day” at Bishop Talton’s directive. In early October of 2010 the observance of Spirit Day was celebrated with the wearing of purple in Canada to show support for the Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Gay and Transgendered (LBGT) young people who are the victims of bullying. Bullying, in any form or against anyone, is obviously contrary to the Gospel of Jesus.

The observance of “Spirit Day” was inaugurated as a response to the rash of widely-publicized bullying-related suicides of gay students. It is hoped that by raising awareness of the bullying of gay students among all of us, as well as our children and our grand-children, that we might prevent future tragedies among our young people who are being bullied each and every day among us. Please pray today for all of those who are bullied in any way.

Diocesan Convention, October 26-27

Our Diocesan Convention is almost here! It’s this Friday evening October 26 and Saturday, October 27. Sister Marie Margaret of Foyer Notre Dame in Haiti will be present to preach and teach, and other opportunities for learning and serving will be available. Once again this year we hope to have an outstanding youth presence, which was a wonderful feature of last year’s convention and a lot of fun for the kids who attended. Forms are on the ministry table and are also available on the diocesan website, diosanjoaquin.org.

Soul Kitchen Dinner Friday, October 26

Our next Soul Kitchen dinner will be October 26.  Main course:  meatloaf.  We can use help every month with advertising, set-up and clean-up, food preparation, and serving.  Sign up at the back.  Questions? See Beth Elwood or Paula Saubolle.

All Saints’ Sunday and the Commemoration of All Souls

This year we will celebrate All Saints’ Day at our Sunday morning liturgies on November 4.  The children of St. John’s have embellished our All Souls’ Memorial Banner with the names of the departed, and during the prayers we will also chant the names of those who have died.  If you would like to include a family member, friend, mentor, or other loved one, please list that person’s name on the sheet on the Ministry Table.

Emergency Services Personnel Dinner on Christmas Eve

October is here and before we realize it, Christmas will be upon us.  On Christmas Eve, we would like to again present a meal for the emergency services personnel.  If anyone would like to participate in this outreach, please contact Paula Saubolle or sign up on the ministry table.

Fair Trade Coffee

The sale of fair trade coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate continues between services each week. Your purchase blesses our community by bringing us closer to our goal of providing playground equipment for our children here, and blesses others by conserving the earth and providing a fair wage to farmers. To volunteer, contact Sharon.
