Christmas at St. John’s

5:30 p.m. Pageant and Communion
This year’s early Christmas Eve Eucharist, celebrated at 5:30 p.m. on December 24, will again involve a simple pageant as the Liturgy of the Word prior to Holy Communion.  All children are invited to participate in this special pageant. There are no rehearsals for our simple pageant but children wishing to participate in the Christmas Story on December 24 will be able to pick up their costumes after the Sunday 10:30 liturgy. They will also be able to pick them up on Christmas Eve at 4:30 — an hour or so before the time the service begins.  Please join us for the early Christmas Eve Eucharist at 5:30.

10:30 p.m. Festive Music and Communion
The late Christmas Eve Eucharist begins on December 24 at 10:30 p.m. with a choral and carol prelude featuring choir anthems and congregational carol singing. The Eucharist will begin with a special entrance rite at approximately 10:50 p.m. The church will be dark as we hear John’s famous prologue read. The Christ candle on the Advent wreath will be lit and Christ’s light will be spread among congregants holding hand held candles while Creator of the Stars of Night is chanted. By candle light we will sing Silent Night together and then comes the Christmas proclamation that Christ is born! The candles will be extinguished as we rise to sing, Oh come all ye faithful. The Eucharist will be celebrated with joy and wonder. St. John’s is blessed with an excellent music program. I hope all will join us at 10:30 but do plan to be seated by 10:50 if you wish to sing Silent Night by candle light.
