Help Feed Our Youth!

Please consider taking one Sunday this fall to bring and/or a simple lunch for our twenty youth and teachers. A sign up sheet is on the Ministry Table. We are looking for one course easy meals. We also need volunteers to help set the tables and clean up afterwards. Many thanks for this special ministry with our youth.

Youth Ministry News

St. John’s is moving forward with its plan to offer two new Christian formation programs for middle and high school youth on Sunday mornings. Both groups will be held following the second service beginning Sunday, September 14. Provided we can get enough volunteers, we plan to provide lunch, or at least a substantial snack every week, at approximately 11:45, before the programs. Both groups will meet together for the meal and then separate into two different age appropriate groupings. Both programs will end at 1:15.
The middle school group (called Rite 13) will meet in the chapel for their program. Carol Foote, Josie Daughrity and Jay and Kathleen Bell have agreed to serve as adult mentors for this program.
The high school group (called J2A) will meet in the Hospitality Room. We will begin with a seven week program featuring confirmation instruction which I will offer, assisted by Deacon Randy Knutson. Steve and Sylvia Augusto have offered to help with this program. It is my hope to find additional adult mentors, as Randy and I cannot lead this program indefinitely.
We need the parish’s support and help for these initiatives. If you can volunteer to be with our teenagers in anyway,
please contact Penny in the church office or Mother Elaine.

Sunday School & Chapel for Children

Mark the date. Children’s Chapel will be held on October 4.
Children’s Chapel will be held the first Sunday of the month,
led by Carol Foote and Josie Daughrity.

The Sunday school program for elementary age school children begins on August 16, the class is held during the Liturgy of the Word during the second service. Children begin in church with their parents and then process to their classes during the singing of the Hymn of Praise. They return during the Exchange of the Peace so they can receive communion with their parents. This year the class will continue with the “Connect Program.,” focusing on Jesus and the New Testament.
For more information, contact Penny Wilson in the church office.

One more musical opportunity will begin this month. Choristers, (music for grades 1-6; singing and playing instruments) will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 4-5 p.m. We hoped to have  Choristers fully functioning by the end of September, but ongoing commitments and then the two week school break got in the way. So we will being in earnest on October 16 and work from there, preparing to sing late October or early November and to start to prepare for Advent and Christmas events. We would like any members of the parish who have children in these grades to join us or give me a call; we really need more members! And what we are providing is free music lessons; a free opportunity to try out music and learn in a intimate, open situation. Choristers includes access to some great songs, hymns and musical treasures. Children in Choristers sing, but also learn to play handbells, Orff (tone bar instruments) Instruments and learn the basics of reading music. And it is all free! All that is required is attendance as we rehearse and then sharing our gifts on a Sunday parents and kids all agree to. Call Randy Knutson at the church office.

Sunday School

This month we’re counting down to the beginning of a new year in Sunday school. Please mark your calendar for September 8 and plan to be here to dig in to a fresh new curriculum. Spark is out, Connect is in! We think the kids will enjoy exploring Bible stories with a bit of quirky humor every week. Come check it out!

Children’s Sunday School Takes a Summer Break

Children are invited to pick up an activity bag as they come into church and to sit with their families during services. We will resume our regular Sunday school classes on September 8 with a new curriculum the new program year. Teachers, we hope that you will enjoy this “time off” and return refreshed in the fall for another rewarding year of teaching.

Preschool and the nursery will continue to provide lessons and care for our younger children.

Children’s Chapel will continue to meet on the first Sunday of every month.

Youth Group will also take a break from weekly meetings during the summer, but keep your eyes peeled for special events in the coming months!
